Ozarks Steam Engine Association

History of the Ozarks Steam Engine Association

The Ozarks Steam Engine Association held their first steam show in 1962 in Billings, MO. Despite heavy rain and mud, the event—featuring threshing, sawing, model steam engines, and more—was a success.

Encouraged by the turnout, the group purchased 17 acres near Republic, MO in 1963. Volunteers worked hard to prepare the grounds, which became home to the annual Steam-O-Rama. Over the years, the site expanded to 34 acres with added amenities,
exhibits, and infrastructure—all fueled by generous member contributions of their
personal finances, time, and talents.

By 2022, space limitations led to the sale of the Republic site. That fall, the 60th Steam-O-Rama marked the final show there. Soon after, OSEA purchased 140 acres of farmland at the historic Whinrey Homestead in Lawrence County, near Halltown, Missouri.

Since then, members have worked tirelessly clearing land, putting up buildings, planting trees, digging a new well, adding electricity, and relocating equipment. In 2023, a major convoy moved steam engines to the new site, marking a new chapter. The work continues with the completion of the Burrell Building and Branch 16’s Cooper Bessemer & Waterloo Boy Gas Engine shed.

We honor our past and we are excited for what’s ahead!
